This was drawn as self-therapy - about how it feels to me to live in an odd time, each person trying different ways to be, to avoid pain, the pain of illness, the pain of separation, and that of uncertainty. Everyone’s therapy is different - I’ve been baking, watching very old movies, drawing. I hope you’ve discovered your help through this year - we know humans have withstood much worse, and so can we. So, this drawing is about how we’re living in a novel time, in our state of disunion.
“Life, as we find it, is too hard for us; it brings us too many pains, disappointments and impossible tasks. In order to bear it we cannot dispense with palliative measures... There are perhaps three such measures: powerful deflections, which cause us to make light of our misery; substitutive satisfactions, which diminish it; and intoxicating substances, which make us insensible to it.”
